Carboxyatractyloside

Carboxyatractyloside potassium salt is a biochemical inhibitor, which is derived from extracts of the plant Atractylis gummifera and related species, with a specific mode of action focused on the mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier (ANT) within cellular functions. This compound operates by binding to the adenine nucleotide translocase on the membrane of mitochondria, essentially blocking the exchange of ADP and ATP across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This inhibition disrupts the cellular energy supply, thereby influencing mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Carboxyatractyloside can induce permeability transition, and that ageing induced mitochondrial DNA disruption and release of cytochrome c; it induces the inhibitory effect of tamoxifen on nonspecific membrane permeability.
