Glycolic acid inhibits the production of malonic acid by inhibiting the enzyme malonate decarboxylase, which converts malonic acid into succinic acid. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to an accumulation of intracellular glycolate and increased levels of succinic acid in cells. Glycolic acid also inhibits dapagliflozin, an inhibitor of sodium-dependent glucose transport proteins, suggesting that it may have pharmacological effects on diabetes mellitus.
