DHE inhibits the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are important for maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol. It also blocks receptors for nerve growth factor (NGF), leading to neuronal death. The gene encoding NGF is found in neurons and a model system has been developed to study this effect.
