Methyl 4H-thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole-5-carboxylate

Methyl 4H-thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole-5-carboxylate is a benzylated analog of the natural product thiophene. The benzyl group is introduced by alkylation with sodium hydride and allyl bromide. It has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in vitro, as well as to inhibit the growth of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus in vivo. Methyl 4H-thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole-5-carboxylate also has antiplasmodial activity against the African parasite Plasmodium falciparum.
