It binds to the active site of the enzyme phosphatase and prevents it from hydrolyzing phosphate esters. BAP is used to prevent the release of calcium ions from bone, which can lead to osteitis fibrosa cystica in patients with esophagectomy or those who have undergone abdominal surgery.
