4-Hydroxy-3-methylcyclohexanone is a hydrogenolysis catalyst that selectively catalyzes the hydrogenolysis of carbonyl groups. It is used to produce 4,4’-dihydroxydiphenylmethane for use in the synthesis of dyes and pharmaceuticals. The catalytic activity of this compound is increased by the presence of metal catalysts such as nickel, palladium, and platinum. The hydrogenation activity is increased with increasing temperature and pressure. 4-Hydroxy-3-methylcyclohexanone has also been shown to be selective for carbonyl groups with an electron withdrawing group such as a halogen or nitro group.
