Cellulose acetate butanoate is a cellulose ester that has been shown to be stable in the presence of strong acids, bases, and oxidizing agents. It is often used as a carrier for drugs with low solubility in water. Cellulose acetate butanoate is also used as a thickening agent and viscosity modifier in many pharmaceutical formulations. The drug can be administered orally or may be injected directly into the vein.
