Ajoene from garlic has antibacterial, anticancer, antiplatelet, and antioxidant effects; it combats various bacteria, yeasts, and cancer cells.

E/Z Ajoene-d14 is a synthetic derivative of allicin. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and yeast. E/Z Ajoene-d14 has also been found to have an anti-inflammatory effect in vitro. The compound inhibits the production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and nitric oxide (NO) in response to oxidative injury in vitro. E/Z Ajoene-d14 also has a hypoglycemic effect when administered orally to mice, suggesting that it may be useful for the treatment of diabetes mellitus type II. E/Z Ajoene-d14 is synthesized by reacting allicin with either sodium or potassium hydroxide in methanol at room temperature under argon gas. Applications E/Z Ajoene-d14 is labelled E/Z Ajoene (A449000) which functions as an antioxidant, by inhibiting the release of superoxide. Ajoene (A449000) also has antithrombotic (anti-clotting) properties, which helps prevent platelets in the blood from forming blood clots, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke in humans.
