3-Nitro-N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-4-aminophenol (3NPA) is an active methylene that is used as a surfactant in the manufacture of paper, textiles, and plastics. 3NPA has been shown to be mutagenic in bacteria and mammalian cells. It has also been shown to be toxic to animals. 3NPA may cause skin irritation, and it can be absorbed through the skin. This chemical is not expected to accumulate in the environment because it degrades rapidly. The chemical has no known carcinogenic effects.
