CAS:Salicylic hydrazide is a coumarin derivative that is used as a hypoglycemic agent. It has been shown to have anti-cancer properties in colorectal adenocarcinoma cells and also has synergistic effects with the fluorescence probe DNP (2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine). Salicylic hydrazide can be synthesized from salicylaldehyde and hydrazine monohydrate. The reaction mechanism proceeds via an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl group of salicylic acid and the amine group of hydrazine. Salicylic hydrazide also has been found to increase human serum glucose levels by inhibiting gluconeogenesis. It does this by catalyzing the conversion of pyruvic acid to lactic acid, which inhibits the enzyme pyruvate carboxykinase (PCK), thereby halting gluconeogenesis.
