CAS:NSC 95397 is a chemical inhibitor of the enzyme protein kinase C (PKC). It binds to PKC and prevents it from catalyzing phosphorylation of proteins. This inhibition has been shown to be effective in the treatment of blood disorders, such as leukemia. NSC 95397 also inhibits apoptosis, or programmed cell death, by preventing the activation of enzymes that regulate mitochondrial membrane potential, thereby blocking the release of cytochrome c and other factors that initiate apoptosis. The inhibitory properties of this drug have also been shown to potentiate the effects of other agents that induce cell death, such as tumor necrosis factor-α.
