    2-Ethylnaphthalene is a liquid hydrocarbon that is used in the production of industrial chemicals and as a carbon source for analytical methods. 2-Ethylnaphthalene has been found to be a good phase equilibrium indicator in organic solvents. It can be detected by its characteristic spectral peaks, which are due to the presence of naphthalene, an aromatic hydrocarbon. The binding constants for 2-ethylnaphthalene with different solvents have been determined using solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS). The detection sensitivity of this compound can be increased by using chromatographic methods such as gas chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography. The reaction products between 2-ethylnaphthalene and potassium hydroxide are shown in the figure below: 2-Ethylnaphthalene + KOH → 2-Ethylnaphthol + KCl
