It functions as an intermediate for the production of a variety of substances, including sulfurous acid, 4-[(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)amino]phenol, and 2-(4-aminophenoxy)ethanol. The hydrolysis reaction occurs in the presence of alkali or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide. The alkyl group is between 1 and 6 carbon atoms long and may be either a straight or branched chain.
