CAS:N-(NBD-aminohexanoyl) D-erythro-sphingosine is a fluorescent derivative of the natural sphingolipid, sphingosine. It binds to the cytosolic calcium ion channel, which is responsible for regulating the concentration of calcium ions in cells. The binding of N-(NBD-aminohexanoyl) D-erythro-sphingosine to the cytosolic calcium ion channel inhibits its activity and causes an increase in cytosolic calcium concentrations. This leads to a reduction in cellular proliferation and an increase in cell death by apoptosis. N-(NBD-aminohexanoyl) D-erythro-sphingosine has been shown to inhibit tumor growth and induce cancer cell death by apoptosis via inhibition of protein synthesis and DNA synthesis.
