Ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-methylisoxazole-4-carboxylate is a sealant that can be used for the protection of large surfaces. It reacts with hydrogen chloride in the presence of a diacid to form an ester. Ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-methylisoxazole-4-carboxylate is biocompatible and can be used as a crosslinker for polymers, such as hydrogels and films. The polymerization reaction between ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-methylisoxazole-4-carboxylate and the functionalities on a surface leads to crosslinking, which provides long term protection against water, gas, or liquid penetration. This sealant has been shown to be reactive and can react with chloride ions to produce hydrochloric acid.
