2-[(4-Aminophenyl)azo]-1,3-dimethyl-1H-imidazoliumchloride is a cationic surfactant that has been shown to have excellent viscosity and good stability when exposed to heat. It is used in cosmetic formulations, such as hair conditioners, as a conditioning agent and treatment method. 2-[(4-Aminophenyl)azo]-1,3-dimethyl-1H-imidazoliumchloride is also a conditioning agent for the skin. It has been shown to be effective at reducing the greasiness of hair by forming an ionic layer on the surface of the hair shaft. This product may also be used as a pigment dispersing agent or stabilizer in paints and coatings.
