Fluphenazine octanoate is a low potency antipsychotic drug. It has long-term efficacy in the treatment of symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations and delusions, and can be used as an experimental model for this disease. Fluphenazine octanoate binds to dopamine receptors in the brain and inhibits locomotor activity by blocking postsynaptic D2 dopamine receptors. This drug also blocks calcium channels, thereby reducing the release of neurotransmitters from presynaptic terminals. Treatment with melatonin reduces the effects of fluphenazine octanoate on locomotor activity in mice.
