The 2-[(carboxymethyl)sulfanyl]butanedioic acid is hydrolyzed to 3-mercaptopropionic acid by hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrate. It also reacts with water vapor and chloride to form mercaptoacetic acid, which can be detected in plasma samples.
