It is also used in analytical chemistry to determine the concentration of chloride in urine samples, using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. 4-Isopropylaniline has been shown to react with cyanide ions to form hydrogen cyanide, which can be detected by chemical ionization. This reaction requires a homogeneous catalyst such as palladium or platinum. The cleavage products are amines, which can be detected with nmr spectroscopy. 4-Isopropylaniline reacts with carbonyl groups to form Friedel-Crafts type reactions, which can be detected by mass spectrometry.
