4-Phenyl-2-oxazolidinone is a lipid-lowering agent that belongs to the class of substituted oxazolidinones. It is used for the treatment of dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia. 4-Phenyl-2-oxazolidinone has been shown to reduce total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids in humans. The mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it appears to act by inhibiting the enzyme HMG CoA reductase and decreasing LDL synthesis. This drug also has an active metabolite that inhibits the activity of acyl coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT).
