    6-Amino-3-methyl-1,3-benzoxazol-2(3H)-one is an organic compound that is used as an analytical method to detect the presence of aminoglycoside antibiotics. The binding of this compound to the bacterial ribosome inhibits protein synthesis and cell division. 6-Amino-3-methyl-1,3-benzoxazol-2(3H)-one has also been shown to inhibit the transport of molecules across an outer membrane by blocking ATP binding cassette transporters. This inhibitor also disrupts bacterial cell filamentation in culture and inhibits the growth of gram negative bacteria. 6-Amino-3-methyl-1,3-benzoxazol-2(3H)-one has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of chloride channels, which are necessary for maintaining cellular volume.
