    Bis(trimethylsilyl)methylamine is a reactive alkylating agent that can be used to prepare amines, terminal alkynes and synthons. Bis(trimethylsilyl)methylamine is produced by the reaction of trimethylsilyl chloride with methylamine or ammonia. It reacts with a wide variety of organic and inorganic substrates, including aromatic compounds, ketones, alcohols, esters, amides and nitriles. Bis(trimethylsilyl)methylamine has been shown to be stereoselective when reacting with protonated amino acid derivatives. The addition of an electron-withdrawing substituent on the silyl group results in a more selective reaction at the alpha position (1). Preparative methods for bis(trimethylsilyl)methylamine include using argon as a solvent and cyanide as an oxidant.
