The Friedel-Crafts reaction is one of the most widely used methods for converting alkyl halides to alkenes. In this reaction, 2-methoxyfuran is converted to ethyl diazoacetate by reacting with hydrogen over an aluminum chloride catalyst. The ethyl diazoacetate can then be reacted with a variety of electrophiles, including alcohols and phenols, to produce different products. The reaction proceeds via nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl group by the oxygen atom on carbon 2.
