Phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF) is a chemical compound that inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is responsible for the breakdown of acetylcholine. It has been shown to inhibit the production of nitric oxide and superoxide anion by human polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride also inhibits matrix metalloproteinases in neural cells. The inhibition of these enzymes leads to a reduction in the rate of cell growth and proliferation. In addition, PMSF inhibits signal peptide cleavage by cytoplasmic proteinases, which may be one of its mechanisms for inhibiting protein synthesis. 6x Gel Loading Dye, SDS+ is a pre-mixed loading buffer with two tracking dyes for agarose and non-denaturing poylacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The solution contains SDS which results in sharper bands as some restriction enzymes remain bound to DNA following cleavage. EDTA is included to chelate magnesium (up to 10 mM) in enzymatic reactions, thereby stopping the reaction. Bromophenol blue and xylene cyanol are the standard tracking dye for electrophoresis.

2,2-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2',2''-nitrilotriethanol (BNTE) is a nitrilotriacetic acid derivative that is used in biochemical and cell culture experiments. It is a potential biomarker for colorectal adenocarcinoma and can be used to analyze the conformational properties of proteins. BNTE has been shown to have a high chemical stability and can be used as an alternative to sodium citrate in sample preparation. BNTE reacts with nucleophiles such as hydroxyl groups, which are present in proteins or peptides, to form stable tertiary amine intermediates. These intermediates are then reacted with electrophiles such as hydrogen peroxide in the presence of enzymes such as horseradish peroxidase. This reaction mechanism leads to the formation of a mass spectrum characteristic of group P2 atp levels that can be detected by plasma mass spectrometry.
