Samarium ist ein silberweißes, metallisches Element, das als Lanthanid im Periodensystem klassifiziert ist, mit der Ordnungszahl 62. Es ist relativ stabil in der Luft und läuft nicht leicht an, obwohl es mit Wasser und Säuren reagieren kann, um Samarium-Hydroxid und Samarium-Salze zu bilden. Samarium weist einen hohen Schmelzpunkt auf und ist bekannt für seine magnetischen Eigenschaften, was es nützlich macht bei der Herstellung von Permanentmagneten, insbesondere Samarium-Kobalt-Magneten, die für ihre hohe Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen Demagnetisierung bekannt sind.
