It is also used as a redox probe for plasma mass spectrometry measurements and has been used as a fluorescent probe for fluorescence detection in reaction solutions. Selenium is an essential trace mineral for humans and animals, with high values found in Brazil nuts, seafood, grains, cereals, eggs, beef liver, pork liver, and oysters. Selenium is also required for photosynthesis in plants and algae where it acts as a cofactor
