It has been shown to inhibit the replication of HIV-1 in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and to inhibit tumor growth in mice. This drug also inhibits DNA synthesis, which may be due to its ability to inhibit ribonucleotide reductase and deoxynucleotide reductase, enzymes that are necessary for DNA synthesis.
