The synthesis of this compound requires the reaction of anhydrous sodium with phosphotungstic acid and hydrochloric acid. This reaction produces dibutyl sulfate and phosphotungstic acid, which can then react with p-hydroxybenzoic acid to produce sodium bisulfate monohydrate. Sodium bisulfate monohydrate's hydroxyl group makes it acidic.
