It is miscible in water and has been shown to have strong steric interactions with macromolecules such as proteins, DNA, RNA and polysaccharides. This inhibition may be due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with the active site of the enzyme. The film-forming properties of dibutyl ether make it a potential antimicrobial agent for use in coating medical devices and surgical instruments.
