4-Amino-2,2,6,6-tetrametilpiperidina-1-óxilo, comúnmente conocido como TEMPOL, es un radical nitroxido estable caracterizado por su estructura única que incluye un anillo de piperidina con cuatro grupos metilo y un grupo amino. ATMPO reacts with the amino groups on proteins to form an adduct and changes their color from red to blue. This reaction can be used to identify the type of oxidative injury and the degree of injury in cells. ATMPO also interacts with integrin receptors on cell surfaces and causes neuronal death. This effect is reversible when ATMPO is removed from the cells.
