Borohidruro de sodio, con el número CAS 16940-66-2, es un sólido cristalino blanco que es altamente soluble en agua y solventes polares. Es un potente agente reductor comúnmente utilizado en química orgánica para la reducción de aldehídos, cetonas y ésteres a sus correspondientes alcoholes. Borohidruro de sodio es estable en condiciones normales, pero puede reaccionar vigorosamente con ácidos fuertes, liberando gas hidrógeno.
