It has an optimum concentration of 2.5 mM and can be used as an effector protein to study polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Methanesulfonic acid ethyl ester is genotoxic and is not carcinogenic, but can result in genotoxic effects at high concentrations. Methanesulfonic acid ethyl ester binds to DNA by reacting with the hydroxyl group on the second carbon of a fatty acid, which facilitates covalent binding to DNA. This agent also inhibits RNA synthesis, leading to cell death. Model organisms such as yeast have been used to investigate the effect of methanesulfonic acid ethyl ester on cell growth.
