Flumazenil es un derivado de benzodiazepina conocido principalmente por su papel como antagonista competitivo del receptor de benzodiazepina. Se utiliza comúnmente en entornos clínicos para revertir los efectos de la sobredosis de benzodiazepinas o la sedación. La sustancia se caracteriza por su capacidad para desplazar las benzodiazepinas de sus sitios de unión en el receptor GABA-A, contrarrestando así sus efectos sedantes. Flumazenil se administra típicamente por vía intravenosa y tiene una vida media relativamente corta, lo que requiere un monitoreo cuidadoso y posibles dosis repetidas en casos de sobredosis. Su estructura química incluye un núcleo de 1,3-benzodiazepina, lo que contribuye a sus propiedades farmacológicas. Si bien es eficaz para revertir la sedación, Flumazenil puede precipitar síntomas de abstinencia en individuos dependientes de benzodiazepinas y puede no ser efectivo contra todos los tipos de sobredosis sedantes. Además, está contraindicado en pacientes con antecedentes de convulsiones o aquellos que han tomado ciertos medicamentos, como antidepresivos tricíclicos.
