It is used for the treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis, herpes zoster (shingles), and condyloma acuminata. Ganciclovir is also used as a preventative measure against opportunistic infection with HIV or CMV in people with AIDS. It is given intravitreally, by injection into the eye, with human immunoglobulin G (IgG) to prevent CMV in persons who have been exposed to it. The combination therapy group includes ganciclovir and acyclovir.
