It is used in the preparation of β-amino acids and as an asymmetric synthesis catalyst. Tris(phenylthio)methane can be used as a polymerization initiator for metathesis reactions, such as the Suzuki reaction. It has been shown to be a good nucleophile and polymerizing agent when combined with hydrochloric acid or silver trifluoromethanesulfonate.
