It is produced by the wild-type strain of Corynebacterium glutamicum as well as the mutant strain. The gene product coded for by the plasmid regulates the expression of butanediol production. The optimum pH for production of (2S,3S)-(+)-2,3-Butanediol is 6.5 to 7.0 and it has been shown to inhibit growth at concentrations greater than 100 mM.
