The 3-MMBA molecule has been synthesized in a high yielding, asymmetric synthesis and was found to be active against Gram-positive bacteria. This molecule displays a potent activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which is a major cause of hospital acquired infections. 3-MMBA binds to the β-lactamase enzyme and inhibits its activity, preventing the hydrolysis of the β-lactam ring.
