The synthesis of 2,4-dimethoxy-5-nitropyrimidine from 2,4-dichloro-5-nitropyrimidine is accomplished by the addition of sodium hydroxide to the reaction mixture at room temperature. This process produces a precipitate which dissolves in water to form a solution containing the desired product.
