Descripción:Dimethyl sulfoxide, or DMSO, is a colorless liquid that is miscible with water and has a high boiling point. It is used as a solvent in organic synthesis and as a polar protic solvent. It can be used to extract nonpolar solutes from polar solvents. The infrared spectrum of DMSO shows bands at 3369 cm-1 and 1675 cm-1. These bands correspond to the stretching frequencies of the S-O group in the sulfite group. Spectra show that DMSO is symmetric about both C-S and C-O bonds, making it a dipole with no net charge. DMSO can be obtained by the equilibrium reaction between dimethyl sulphoxide and ethylene: 2CH3SO + H2 → CH3SO2H + CH3OH
