The compound has been shown to be useful for the detection of focal lesions in the breast, lung and pancreas. 4MPC is also an alternative to gadolinium diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (GdDTPA), which can lead to nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and other side effects.
