It inhibits viral replication by inhibiting the activity of DNA polymerase, which is needed to synthesize DNA. 2'-Deoxy-5'-O-DMT-2'-fluoro-N4-phenoxyacetylcytidine has been shown to be effective against HIV and HSV in vitro and in vivo. This nucleotide analog has also been shown to be potent against Hepatitis B viruses and adenovirus type 3.
