It is composed of a sulfonate group and two hydroxyl groups, which are responsible for its catalytic activity. The synthesis of polymers with BES as a catalyst can be achieved by the addition of an organic monomer to a polymerization reactor containing BES. The use of this polymerization catalyst has been shown to reduce the energy input required for production, leading to increased efficiency. In addition, it has been shown that the use of BES as a catalyst produces polymers with better mechanical properties than those produced using other catalysts.
