3-Phenyl-1,3-thiazolidine-2,4-dione is a chloroacetate derivative used in the synthesis of various drugs. It has been shown to be an effective antibacterial agent and antifungal agent. 3-Phenyl-1,3-thiazolidine-2,4-dione is also active against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. The antibacterial activity of 3-phenyl-1,3-thiazolidine 2,4 dione is due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria by binding to the ribosomes and preventing peptide bond formation. This compound also inhibits fungal growth by binding to ergosterol in the cell membrane.
