In mice, nonanoic acid has been shown to have an antibacterial effect on Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This compound also prevents the activation of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and TLR2 in human monocytes.
