Acido tetraidrofolico, noto anche come tetraidrofolato (THF), è un derivato della vitamina B solubile in acqua che svolge un ruolo cruciale nel metabolismo cellulare, in particolare nella sintesi di acidi nucleici e aminoacidi. È la forma attiva del folato, essenziale per la sintesi, riparazione e metilazione del DNA, rendendolo vitale per la divisione e la crescita cellulare. Acido tetraidrofolico è caratterizzato dalla sua capacità di accettare e donare unità di un carbonio in varie reazioni biochimiche, facilitando la conversione dell'omocisteina in metionina e la sintesi di purine e timidina. Tetrahydrofolic acid has been used as an antimicrobial agent, mainly to inhibit bacterial growth. In wastewater treatment, tetrahydrofolic acid has been shown to have a matrix effect on polymerization reactions and transfer reactions.
