polimixina B è un antibiotico polipeptidico ciclico utilizzato principalmente per trattare infezioni causate da batteri Gram-negativi. È derivato dal batterio Bacillus polymyxa e presenta una struttura unica caratterizzata da una coda idrofobica e un anello peptidico carico positivamente, che gli consente di interrompere le membrane cellulari batteriche. Questa interruzione porta a un aumento della permeabilità e, infine, alla lisi cellulare, rendendolo efficace contro una serie di patogeni, tra cui Pseudomonas aeruginosa ed Escherichia coli. polimixina B è spesso utilizzato in formulazioni topiche a causa della sua nefrotossicità e neurotossicità quando somministrato sistemicamente. Si trova comunemente in unguenti, colliri e altre preparazioni topiche. CAS:Polymyxin B is a sulfonamide antibiotic with broad spectrum of activity against Gram-negative bacteria. It binds to the bacterial membrane, causing an increase in the cellâs permeability and thus leading to cell death. A study on human neutrophils showed that polymyxin B reduces the expression of neomycin sulfate through inhibition of protein synthesis, which leads to cell death by lysosomal enzyme release.
