5,6-Difluoro-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione is a pyrimidine compound that has been shown to be an effective chemotherapy agent. It can be used to treat cancer cells by inhibiting DNA and RNA synthesis. This drug binds to thymine nucleosides and inhibits the activity of enzymes involved in the metabolic pathways that synthesize DNA and RNA. The drug also inhibits the production of thymidine monophosphate (TMP) through its inhibition of TMP synthase. 5,6-Difluoro-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione is not active against normal cells because they do not contain thymine nucleosides. This compound is also soluble in trifluoroacetic acid and can be purified using dilution or preparative solvents.
