Furantoina, noto anche come nitroFurantoina, è un antibiotico utilizzato principalmente per trattare le infezioni del tratto urinario. Appartiene alla classe dei composti nitrofuranici e presenta un'attività antibatterica ad ampio spettro contro vari batteri Gram-positivi e Gram-negativi. La struttura chimica di Furantoina presenta un anello nitrofuranico, essenziale per le sue proprietà antimicrobiche. Agisce inibendo la sintesi delle proteine batteriche, del DNA, dell'RNA e della sintesi della parete cellulare, portando infine alla morte cellulare batterica.
