This compound can be synthesized by reacting sodium carbonate with acetophenone in the presence of deuterium isotope. The synthesis can be carried out in anhydrous conditions to reduce the formation of water-soluble products. 3'-Chloroacetophenone can be used to prepare a fatty acid derivative by reacting it with potassium hydroxide and a fatty acid in methanol.
