Sodium cacodylate trihydrate is a buffering agent that can be used in biochemical research. It is prepared by the reaction of acetic acid with sodium bicarbonate and calcium oxide. Sodium cacodylate trihydrate interacts with various ions to maintain pH and has a redox potential of -0.6 volts. The buffer solution exhibits pH stability for at least 24 hours when stored at 4 degrees Celsius. This buffer can be used in vitro and in vivo experiments, including measurements of human serum, plasma mass spectrometry, polymerase chain reactions, and cellular physiology studies. Sodium cacodylate trihydrate also binds to epidermal growth factor (EGF) and hydroxyl groups on proteins, which may explain why it has been shown to have water vapor absorption properties.

3-(N-Morpholino)-2-hydroxy-1-propanesulfonic acid (3MP) is an amphipathic molecule that has been shown to reduce the size of influenza virus particles and inhibit their ability to attach to host cells. 3MP binds to the surface of the virus particle and disrupts the interaction between the virus and host cell, preventing infection. This agent shows no significant toxicity in mice at doses up to 2000 mg/kg. 3MP is soluble in water and can be used for detection of influenza virus particles using magnetic particles.
